Lura J. Powell, Ph.D. is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Washington State Life Sciences Discovery Fund, which funds innovative life sciences research in the State of Washington to promote competitiveness, enhance economic vitality, and improve health and health care. Until June 2007, Dr. Powell was President and CEO of Advanced Imaging Technologies, Inc. where she led the medical imaging company in the development of the ARIA Breast Imaging System, winner of the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award in the field of ultrasound imaging technologies. Prior to joining AIT, she held the positions of Senior Vice President of Battelle and Director of the DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Director of the Advanced Technology Program at the Department of Commerce. Dr. Powell serves on the board of directors of Avista Corporation, the Tri-Cities Industrial Development Council (TRIDEC) and the Washington Technology Alliance. She is also a member of Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna's Technology Advisory Group, which meets quarterly to provide a forum for open dialogue and collaboration on issues related to technology and how they impact Washington's business community. Dr. Powell received a B.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Maryland and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
